GentleWaves?

Before a single word is spoken, behavior is already telling a story.
Like the ocean, behavior moves in waves—each carrying its own pattern, rhythm, and meaning. Some waves arrive gently, offering clarity and calm. Others crash unexpectedly, bringing confusion, intensity, or uncertainty. For children and adults navigating autism, developmental differences, emotional challenges, or major life transitions, these waves can feel overwhelming—not only for them, but for the families who love and support them.
For many families, one simple phrase is repeated every day: “Be gentle.” Gentle with others. Gentle with ourselves. Gentle during moments of frustration, anxiety, or overwhelm.
At GentleWaves, that phrase became our philosophy.
We believe behavior is communication. Rather than resisting the waves, we learn from them. We observe patterns, respect rhythms, and respond with patience, compassion, and skill. We recognize that behind every behavior is a need, an emotion, or a message waiting to be understood.
Like skilled sailors working with the sea rather than fighting against it, we help families navigate behavioral challenges through gentle guidance, evidence-based support, and trusted relationships. Our goal is not to control behavior, but to understand it, anticipate needs, and create opportunities for growth.
The name GentleWaves reflects both the rhythm of behavior and the spirit in which we respond to it. Waves may be unpredictable, but they can be understood. Behavior may be challenging, but it can be met with gentleness.
Every wave matters. Every behavior has meaning. And every family deserves support on their journey.

GentleWaves Philosophy

“Every respite stay is an opportunity for children to feel safe, valued, and successful while giving families the confidence to rest and recharge. At GentleWaves, we celebrate progress, build on strengths, and create meaningful experiences tailored to each child’s unique abilities and needs.”

What we do?

Gentle Waves is a family-centered autism respite retreat designed to support the entire family, not just the child. Families stay together in a welcoming, apartment environment where they receive individualized guidance, practical coaching, and opportunities to strengthen everyday routines. While children participate in engaging, individualized activities led by autism-trained professionals, parents can enjoy planned short breaks to rest, reconnect, or simply recharge, knowing their child is safe and well supported. Our approach focuses on building confidence, reducing family stress, and equipping everyone with practical strategies that can be carried into daily life long after their stay.
Parents have the opportunity through ZOOM to connect to experienced BCBAs and onsite RBT professionals and volunteers.

Meet Alfred Dsouza

Hello, I’m Alfred Dsouza.

For over ten years, I have supported children, teens, and families navigating autism, developmental differences, and behavioral challenges. Many know me as Mr. Al or Mr. D—names that reflect the trust we have built together.

As a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), I have learned that every behavior communicates a need, feeling, or message. Meaningful progress comes from meeting each person with patience, respect, and compassion.

One phrase I have heard countless times from parents, teachers, and caregivers is, “Be gentle.” Those words became the foundation of my philosophy. Being gentle does not mean lowering expectations; it means meeting people where they are and supporting growth with dignity and understanding.

GentleWaves was born from that belief.
As I begin this new chapter in India, my vision is to create a place where families find respite, connection, learning, and hope—a place where children and adults are valued, families feel supported, and challenges are met with understanding rather than judgment.
Like the ocean, life brings calm waters and unexpected waves. At GentleWaves, we help families navigate those waves—gently, thoughtfully, and together.

I look forward to welcoming you and your family to the GentleWaves community.

Warm regards,
Alfred Dsouza
